What happened

President Donald Trump hosted a roundtable at the White House on January 16, 2026, on what he called “the largest investment in rural health care in American history,” joined by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists from across the country, and members of Congress. “As part of the Great Big, Beautiful Bill, we’ve increased funding for health care by an unprecedented $50 billion. That’s rural health care,” the President said — “$50 billion over five years, which will benefit Americans in all 50 states,” made possible, as he stated it, by cutting waste, fraud, and abuse from Medicaid and reinvesting the funds.

The President argued that under the Affordable Care Act only seven percent of annual Medicaid spending on rural hospitals had reached rural hospitals, leaving facilities with low occupancy, workforce shortages, and failing programs. Under the Rural Health Transformation Program, he said, the funds will go to “empowering rural hospitals, strengthening their workforce, modernizing facilities and technology,” so rural Americans get care in their own communities. Secretary Rollins, asked about food prices, said wholesale egg prices were down 86 percent, with retail down somewhat less, as she stated it.

Why it matters

The roundtable is the public launch presentation of the Rural Health Transformation Program — a $50 billion, five-year commitment that sits at the intersection of this administration’s health and rural constituencies — filed on the Health & MAHA hub with Kennedy, Rollins, and Oz, the three officials who administer its pieces, on stage beside the President.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard candidate: the Rural Health Transformation Program as presented here — $50 billion over five years across all 50 states, funded, as the President stated it, from Medicaid waste, fraud, and abuse savings. Flagged for the scoreboard editor; the entry itself stays review-gated.
