What happened
President Donald Trump took questions before departing the White House for Detroit on January 13, 2026. “We’ll be talking about how well the economy is doing. As you know, the inflation numbers just came out and we have very low inflation,” he said, adding that the figures gave the Federal Reserve chair — “too late Powell,” in his phrase — “the chance to give us a nice, beautiful, big rate cut.” “Rates are falling also. And growth is going up. We have tremendous growth numbers.”
He previewed the Detroit speech, pointed reporters to his statements on Iran and Minnesota, and ran the crime record as he stated it: removals of “killers, murderers, drug dealers” from Chicago and other cities, crime in Washington, DC “almost non-existent,” Memphis “making tremendous strides,” and New Orleans crime “down about 65% — we’ve only been there for 3 weeks,” with the country’s crime numbers “among the best numbers we’ve ever had,” as he stated them.
Why it matters
The gaggle is the morning-of frame for the Detroit day paged in this collection — the inflation print and the rate-cut demand as the President chose to present them before the Economic Club address, and the crime figures he attached to the enforcement operations then running in several cities.
