What happened
President Donald Trump toured a Ford plant in Michigan on January 13, 2026, with Executive Chair Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley, who described the expansion under way as they stated it: the plant adding a third shift to run “24 hours, 6 days a week” for the company’s bestselling product, the company “adding market share… adding jobs, not just here, but elsewhere,” and a plan to expand an existing plant to build “a combustion vehicle, a combustion truck, affordable one, in Tennessee.” “They’re building more plants in the United States because of tariffs,” the President said, adding that Ford’s leadership told him “they’ve never seen anything like it in all of the years that they’ve been in business.”
On trade, asked about renegotiating USMCA, the President said: “I don’t even think about USMCA… We don’t need cars made in Canada. We don’t need cars made in Mexico. We want to make them here. And that’s what’s happening.” The agreement, he said, was “irrelevant to me” — “No real advantage to us” — while crediting tariffs and regulatory relief with the U.S. automakers’ position as he described it.
Why it matters
The tour is the reshoring argument at plant level: the specific operating claims — a third shift, around-the-clock production, a new Tennessee combustion truck — come from Ford’s own chair and CEO on camera, alongside the President’s plainest statement yet that USMCA’s survival does not matter to him, filed on the Economy, Tariffs & Trade hub.
Scoreboard watch
