What happened
Sergio Gor formally assumed charge as U.S. Ambassador to India at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi on January 12, 2026, three days after arriving in the country, and delivered his first public address in the role, carried by Republic World. “It is great to be here as the United States Ambassador,” he said. “I come to this remarkable nation with profound respect and with a clear mission to take the partnership between our two great nations to the next level. This is the intersection of the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy,” as his remarks were reported.
Gor recalled his first visit to India in 2013 — the Taj Mahal, Jaipur, Ranthambore, and Punjab — and said he had always wanted to return. He said President Trump, over a dinner just after New Year’s, had recounted his own India visit and his friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Gor said he hoped the President would visit India within the next year or two. On the relationship itself, he declared that “no partner is more essential than India,” set a goal of pursuing “a very ambitious agenda” as true strategic partners, and addressed the tariff dispute directly: “Real friends can disagree, but they will always resolve their differences in the end,” as ANI reported. Trade negotiations between the two governments were set to resume the following day, January 13, according to reporting of the address, and Gor announced that India would be invited to join the Pax Silica technology framework as a full member the following month, as reported by Latestly.
Why it matters
The arrival address set the terms of Gor’s ambassadorship in his own words: India framed as America’s most essential partner, the Trump–Modi personal channel as the relationship’s anchor, and the tariff fight treated as a disagreement between friends to be settled — the framing he has carried into every trade statement since.
Scoreboard watch
This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: Gor’s January 12, 2026 arrival commitments — a resumed trade negotiation, India’s full membership in Pax Silica, and a hoped-for presidential visit to India within one to two years — each as stated in the address, to be checked against events.
