What happened
President Donald Trump addressed House Republicans at their member retreat in Washington on January 6, 2026, framing the year ahead around the midterm elections. “Together we had 12 months of unprecedented success in 2025 and now we’re going to make history and break records with the epic midterm victory we’re going to pull off,” he said — while puzzling, as he put it, over the pattern he intends to beat: “They say when you win the presidency, you lose the midterm… I wish you could explain to me what the hell is going on with the mind of the public because we have the right policy.”
The President opened with a tribute to Rep. Doug LaMalfa of California, who had died the day before — “a great, great member,” the leader of the Western Caucus and “a fierce champion on California water issues,” as the President described him — and offered condolences to his wife Jill and his family. He praised the House majority as the most successful in decades, achieved, as he noted, without a big majority but as a unified one, and pointed to the Venezuela operation two days earlier as a very good day for the country.
Why it matters
The retreat address is the President’s first full political speech of the midterm year: the win-the-midterm-against-history argument he will carry through 2026, delivered to the members whose seats decide it, filed on the Elections & Governance hub alongside the campaign-year record.
