What happened

President Donald Trump took questions as he greeted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago on December 28, 2025, ahead of their bilateral meeting. Asked whether he believes President Putin is serious about peace this time, he said: “I do. I think he is. I think they’re both — got to make a deal. Got to get it done. Too many people dying… I do believe that we have the makings of a deal that’s good for Ukraine, good for everybody.”

Asked about deadlines, the President said: “I don’t have deadlines… My deadline is getting the war [ended]” and the deaths stopped. On security guarantees, he said there will be a strong security agreement with the European nations very much involved in protection. President Zelenskyy said the two teams had moved the negotiations forward over the previous month, working on the documents — including the peace plan, prosperity, and security tracks — and on the sequencing of steps, as he described the work. The President said he would call President Putin back after the meeting to continue the negotiation.

Why it matters

The greet is the on-record opening position for the meeting whose readout is paged next in this collection: no artificial deadline, a strong European-backed security agreement as a stated component, and both presidents’ teams’ document work described by the principals themselves at the door.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: the no-deadline posture and the strong-security-agreement expectation, as stated at this greet, frame the dated claims the readout page then measures. Noted for the scoreboard editor; no entry is published from this page.
