What happened
President Donald Trump signed an executive order at the White House on December 18, 2025, surrounded by medical figures he described as among the most respected people in the country. “Today, I’m pleased to announce that I will be signing an executive order to reschedule marijuana from a schedule one to a schedule three control substance with legitimate medical uses,” he said.
“We have people begging for me to do this. People that are in great pain,” the President said, describing the action as requested for decades by “American patients suffering from extreme pain, incurable diseases, aggressive cancers, seizure disorders, neurological problems, and more, including numerous veterans with service related injuries, and older Americans who live with chronic medical problems.” He said the reclassification “polls at 82%,” as he stated the figure. Joining him, as he named them, were Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, and National Institute on Drug Abuse Director Dr. Nora Volkow, among other medical leaders who spoke to the patient case for the change.
Why it matters
The rescheduling order is a dated, signed federal action moving marijuana to Schedule III — the administration’s framing is medical: pain, cancer, seizure and neurological patients, and wounded veterans. This chronicle files the signing on the Health & MAHA hub.
