What happened

President Donald Trump held a combined border event at the White House on December 15, 2025. He opened with a readout of that day’s call with European leaders and President Zelenskyy on the Russia-Ukraine war — “I think we’re closer now than we have been, ever” — before turning to the border record: crossings at their lowest level ever recorded, as he stated it, and a 50 percent drop in fentanyl coming across the border, as he stated that figure.

“That’s why today I’m taking one more step to protect Americans from the scourge of deadly fentanyl flooding into our country,” he said. “With this historic executive order I will sign today, we’re formally classifying fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction, which is what it is. No bomb does what this is doing. Two hundred to 300,000 people die every year that we know of,” as he stated the toll. Before signing, he presented the first Mexican Border Defense Medals: “Here today are the first 13 warriors who will receive the Mexican Border Defense Medal, which is a big deal.” Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Border Czar Tom Homan spoke, Hegseth framing the mission as “100 percent operational control of the southern border” and declaring: “Border security is national security.” Attorney General Pam Bondi and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Caine were among those present, as the President noted.

Why it matters

Two firsts share this event: a new service medal for the border mission, and the formal classification of fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction — the legal framing the administration uses for its counternarcotics campaign. This chronicle files it on the Border & Immigration hub; the casualty and crossings figures are the President’s, as stated at the event.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard candidate: a dated executive-order signing — fentanyl classified as a weapon of mass destruction — together with the first presentation of the Mexican Border Defense Medal. Flagged for the scoreboard editor; the entry itself stays review-gated.
