What happened

President Donald Trump signed H.R. 452, the Miracle on Ice bill, at the White House on December 12, 2025, flanked by members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team. An administration official read the measure into the record: Congress authorized three medals to be struck “commemorating the historic victory of the United States men’s hockey team in 1980 at the Lake Placid Olympics,” where the team defeated the Soviet Union in the famous Miracle on Ice game.

“This was one of the greatest moments in the history of US sports,” the President said. “We don’t use auto pens here,” he added as he signed. He welcomed the players by name — among them Jim Craig, Steve Janaszak, Bill Baker, Dave Christian, Ken Morrow, Jack O’Callahan, Mike Ramsey, Neal Broten, Mike Eruzione, Rob McClanahan, Buzz Schneider, Dave Silk, and Phil Verchota, as introduced at the ceremony.

Why it matters

The signing gives the 1980 team’s victory its Congressional Gold Medal commemoration, with the surviving players at the Resolute desk. This chronicle files it on the Elections & Governance hub as the ceremonial record, and flags the bill signing below.
