What happened
President Donald Trump hosted a roundtable with farmers at the White House on December 8, 2025, joined by Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and members of Congress. “I’m delighted to announce this afternoon that the United States will be taking a small portion of the hundreds of billions of dollars we receive in tariffs… and we’re going to be giving and providing it to the farmers in economic assistance,” he said. “We’re going to use that money to provide 12 billion dollars in economic assistance to American farmers.”
Secretary Rollins detailed the structure as she stated it: an $11 billion bridge payment effectuating now, with the money to move by February 28, 2026, and $1 billion held back to ensure coverage. The President also pointed to trade commitments he credited to his negotiations — “China committed to over $40 billion of soybean purchases” and $60 billion in agricultural purchase commitments overall, as he stated them — and to gasoline at $1.99 a gallon reported in three states, as he stated it.
Why it matters
The roundtable is the administration’s farm-relief delivery in one sitting: tariff revenue converted into a dated bridge payment ahead of the 2026 planting season, announced by the President and specified by his Agriculture Secretary. This chronicle files it on the Economy, Tariffs & Trade hub; the amounts and dates are the President’s and Secretary Rollins’s, as stated at the table.
Scoreboard watch
Scoreboard candidate: a dated assistance commitment — $12 billion announced, $11 billion in bridge payments to move by February 28, 2026, per Secretary Rollins — plus the soybean purchase commitments as stated by the President. Flagged for the scoreboard editor; the entry itself stays review-gated.
