What happened
President Donald Trump attended the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw at the Kennedy Center in Washington on December 5, 2025. During the ceremony, FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented him with the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize — “Football Unites the World” — reading the citation: the prize is awarded to “a distinguished individual who exemplifies an unwavering commitment to advancing peace and unity throughout the world through their notable leadership and action,” and FIFA “awards the 2025 FIFA Peace Prize… to Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, in recognition of his extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world,” as read at the ceremony. Infantino pointed to the Abraham Accords, the Gaza agreement, the Cambodia–Thailand peace, and “yesterday here in Washington, the Washington peace agreement between Rwanda and the DRC.”
The President called it “truly one of the great honors of my life,” saying: “We saved millions and millions of lives. The Congo is an example. Over 10 million people killed and it was heading for another 10 million very quickly… India, Pakistan, so many different wars that we’re able to end,” as he stated them. He thanked the First Lady, and the leaders of Canada and Mexico — “the coordination and friendship and relationship has been outstanding” — and said World Cup ticket sales had set records beyond what Infantino thought possible, as he put it.
Why it matters
The draw puts the President at the center of the 2026 World Cup’s opening ritual on his home ground, and the first FIFA Peace Prize is presented to him on the strength of the year’s peace agreements as FIFA stated them — one day after he hosted the Rwanda–Congo signing. This chronicle files it on the Elections & Governance hub with the citation and every claim attributed as stated at the ceremony.
