What happened
President Donald Trump announced at the White House on December 3, 2025, that his administration was “officially terminating Joe Biden’s ridiculously burdensome… CAFE standards,” the federal fuel-economy rules. “Today, my administration has taken historic action to lower costs for American consumers, protect American auto jobs and make buying a car much more affordable for countless American families and also safer,” he said, arguing the standards had pushed car prices up more than 25 percent, as he stated the figure, and that the action is expected to save the typical consumer at least $1,000 off the price of a new car, as he put it.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s department would issue the new rules rescinding the Biden fuel-economy standards, the President said. He was joined by Ford CEO Jim Farley and Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa; he cited Ford’s announced $5 billion investment across its Kentucky and Michigan plants creating at least 4,000 jobs, and Stellantis’s announced $13 billion to expand U.S. manufacturing by more than 50 percent, as he stated them, alongside the administration’s revocation of the EPA tailpipe standards and California’s emissions waiver.
Why it matters
The announcement is the auto chapter of the administration’s deregulatory program delivered as an affordability measure: a named federal standard terminated, a stated per-car saving, and the industry’s two largest U.S. investment pledges recited from the same podium. This chronicle files it on the Economy, Tariffs & Trade hub; the figures are the President’s, as stated.
Scoreboard watch
Scoreboard candidate: a dated regulatory termination — the Biden CAFE standards rescinded through new DOT rules under Secretary Duffy — with the President’s stated expectation of at least $1,000 saved per new car. Flagged for the scoreboard editor; the entry itself stays review-gated.
