What happened
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt briefed members of the media at the White House on December 1, 2025. She opened with the President’s week: a ninth cabinet meeting of the year, the Trump Accounts announcement, the Rwanda–Congo peace signing, the National Christmas Tree lighting, and the FIFA World Cup draw.
The center of the briefing was the November 26 ambush of two West Virginia National Guard members in Washington. Leavitt said U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, had died of her wounds and U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe remained hospitalized, and that the suspect was “an Afghan national who was flown into our country by Joe Biden’s administration in September 2021.” She said the administration was “actively reexamining all of the Afghans imported into the country by Joe Biden,” that the President had “permanently paused migration of foreign nationals from third-world countries that pose a very high risk,” and cited a New York Times report that Somali migrants in Minnesota had defrauded “nearly $1 billion in taxpayer-funded benefits,” as she characterized it. In questions, she said asylum adjudications and special immigrant visas had both been paused.
She closed by defending the White House’s new media portal and rebutting a New York Times story questioning the President’s fitness: “He is the most accessible president in history… You all see him almost every single day.”
Why it matters
The briefing is the administration’s formal response-in-brief to the Guard shooting: the facts as the White House stated them, the admissions re-examination, and the asylum and visa pauses, all delivered from the podium by the Press Secretary whose own chair this chronicle tracks.
