What happened
Vice President JD Vance celebrated Thanksgiving with servicemembers at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, on November 26, 2025, in remarks carried on the White House channel. He was introduced by Kid Rock, who recalled entertaining troops overseas across the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Vance opened on the news of the day: “there was a shooting outside the White House just a couple of hours ago… a couple of National Guardsmen were injured in the line of duty,” and he asked “everybody who’s a person of faith to say a prayer for those two National Guardsmen that they’re able to spend Thanksgiving with their families.” He called soldiers “the sword and the shield of the United States of America.”
He then honored the post unit by unit — the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles), the Strike and Destiny Brigades just home from deployments in Europe and the Middle East (“welcome home”), the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment’s Night Stalkers, and the 52nd Ordnance Group among others — relayed the President’s Thanksgiving thanks, praised Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, and quoted Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s standards speech: “do unto your unit as you would have done unto your own child’s unit,” as Vance quoted it.
Why it matters
The Vice President is the administration’s most frequent uniform-facing speaker, and this Thanksgiving stop — given under the shadow of the Washington shooting the same afternoon — records both the tribute and the standards argument the War Department is making to the force. This chronicle files it on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.
