What happened

President Donald Trump met Zohran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York City, in the Oval Office on November 21, 2025, and the two took questions together afterward. “We’ve just had a great meeting, a really good, very productive meeting,” the President said. “We have one thing in common. We want this city of ours that we love to do very well.” He congratulated Mamdani on his race and said the two were “very strong in common, like housing and getting housing built,” as well as food and prices. “The better he does, the happier I am,” the President said. “There is no difference in party.”

Mamdani called it “a productive meeting focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City,” and on “the need to deliver affordability to New Yorkers” — rent, groceries, and utilities among the topics, as he listed them.

Under questioning, the President said of his earlier “communist” label for Mamdani that “he’s got views out there, but who knows — I mean, we’re going to see what works. He’s going to change also. We all change.” He said a question about Prime Minister Netanyahu and New York had not been discussed. Asked about the mayor-elect’s past “fascist” remark about him, Mamdani said both men had been clear about their positions and views. On immigration enforcement, the President said: “What we did is, we discussed crime. More than ICE, per se, we discussed crime. And he doesn’t want to see crime, and I don’t want to see crime.”

Why it matters

This is the first on-camera meeting between the President and the incoming mayor of the nation’s largest city after a campaign season of mutual attacks, and both men used it to stake out a working relationship on housing, prices, and crime. The chronicle files it on the Elections & Governance hub as the opening entry in that federal–city record.
