What happened
Vice President JD Vance sat for a fireside chat with Breitbart News Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle in Washington, D.C., on November 20, 2025. Much of the conversation worked through that morning’s September jobs report — 119,000 new jobs, delayed by the government shutdown — with the Vice President saying wages were on the rise and manufacturing hours worked were going up.
“The government shutdown didn’t help, to be clear,” Vance said, arguing it “pumped the brakes a little bit” on the economic news but that the effect would ultimately be “very, very minor.” Comparing take-home pay, he said Americans had lost about $3,000 in the prior administration and had gained about $1,200, adjusted for inflation, in the first ten months of this one, as he stated the figures. “The best thing that you can say about the Trump economy is that American jobs are going to American workers for a change,” he said.
On affordability, his message to people who had not yet felt the gains was: “We get it and we hear you and we know that there’s a lot of work to do.” He said the West Wing had held a meeting the day before on making housing more affordable for young Americans. Asked about Pope Leo’s recent comments on immigration, Vance said the Church’s teaching, as he framed it, holds both that immigrants must be treated humanely and that every nation has the right to control its borders.
Why it matters
The Vice President is the administration’s chief explainer on the economy, and this chat is his fullest on-record account that week of the jobs data, the shutdown’s cost, and the affordability problem the administration says it inherited — the message track that runs through the Economy hub.
