What happened

President Donald Trump hosted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary for a bilateral lunch at the White House on November 7, 2025. The President said the two would talk trade, Russia–Ukraine, and energy and energy prices, and cited the Walmart statement that Thanksgiving would cost 25 percent less than the year before, as he stated the figure. Orbán said the purpose of the visit was “to open a new chapter” in U.S.–Hungary relations, saying the previous administration had “ruined” the relationship and that in the last ten months the President had “restored the old level of the relationship,” as Orbán stated it.

In questions, the President said the basic dispute blocking a Budapest summit with President Putin was that the Russians “just don’t want to stop yet,” said the war was taking “a big toll” with 7,000 soldiers a week being lost between the two sides, as he stated the figure, and said of the war: “I inherited the war, and I think we’re going to get it ended. Not too distant future.” He also renewed his call to terminate the Senate filibuster, arguing that if Republicans ended it the government could be reopened and, as he put it, “we will have the most productive three years in the history of our country.”

Why it matters

The lunch is the public opening of the U.S.–Hungary reset Orbán described, held with the Budapest Putin summit stalled on the record the President gave, and it carries his filibuster-termination demand — repeated from the November 5 Senate breakfast paged alongside this one — into a foreign-leader setting.
