What happened
In a White House video statement released on November 5, 2025, President Donald Trump said “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria,” that “thousands and thousands of Christians are being killed,” and that “radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” as he stated it. “I am hereby making Nigeria a country of particular concern,” he said. “That’s a legal definition.”
The President cited figures of 3,100 killed in Nigeria against 4,476 worldwide, as he stated them, and said he was asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, “to immediately look into this matter and to report back to me. And I mean like immediately.” He closed: “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria and numerous other countries… We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world.”
Why it matters
The country-of-particular-concern designation is a formal State Department category, and the statement pairs it with a direct tasking to the House Appropriations Committee — the opening move of the Nigeria religious-freedom track that the President was asked about, and answered on, in the November 2 Air Force One gaggle paged alongside this one.
