What happened
President Donald Trump spoke with reporters upon arrival in Palm Beach, Florida, on October 31, 2025, on his return from Asia. “We had an amazing trip. We had incredible meetings with President Xi of China, as you know, with the brilliant new prime minister of Japan… and with the president of South Korea,” he said, adding: “We brought back home with us trillions of dollars,” as he stated the figure.
On the shutdown, the President said: “All they have to do is say, ‘Let’s go. Let’s open up our country.’ And everything snaps back into shape.” Asked whether he would meet Democratic leadership, he said: “I’m always going to meet. All they have to do is open up the country. Let them open up the country and we’ll meet. We’ll meet very quickly, but they have to open up the country.” He also called the Affordable Care Act “a disaster… bad health care at a very high price,” as he stated it, ahead of the Halloween celebration at the White House that night.
Why it matters
The arrival gaggle is the President’s first statement back on U.S. soil after the Asia trip: the trip’s claimed scale in his own figure, and the sequencing condition — reopen first, then meet — that governed the shutdown’s remaining twelve days.
