What happened
President Donald Trump opened his bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China in Busan, South Korea, on October 30, 2025. “It’s a great honor to be with a friend of mine really for a long time now,” he said. “President Xi is a great leader of a great country. And I think we’re going to have a fantastic relationship for a long period of time.” He said the two had “already agreed to a lot of things and we’ll agree to some more right now.”
President Xi, speaking through an interpreter, said the two had spoken by phone three times since the President’s re-election, exchanged several letters, and stayed in close contact, and that “our joint guidance relations have remained stable on the whole.” He said it is “normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions now and then,” that the two countries “are fully able to help each other succeed and prosper together,” and that their economic and trade teams had “reached a basic consensus on addressing our respective concerns.” He cited the Gaza ceasefire agreement and the Cambodia–Thailand border declaration the President had witnessed in Malaysia among the peace efforts he appreciated, as he stated them.
Why it matters
The opening statements are the public frame for the Busan meeting — the first Trump–Xi meeting of the term on this chronicle’s record — and the “basic consensus” Xi described is the agreement whose terms the President then read out in the Air Force One gaggle paged alongside this one.
