What happened

Vice President JD Vance delivered remarks at a Turning Point USA tour event at the University of Mississippi in Oxford on October 29, 2025, seven weeks after the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Erika Kirk introduced him, saying she saw “some similarities of my husband in JD,” and noted the day’s symbolism: “It’s Wednesday. Seven weeks.” She announced that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had partnered with Turning Point USA so any Florida high school student could start a Club America chapter, as she stated the arrangement.

The Vice President set aside his prepared text: “I got this whole speech written and I’m not going to deliver any of what I had written. I’m just going to speak from the heart, because that’s what Charlie would so often do.” He recounted learning in a West Wing meeting that Charlie had been shot, and put the crowd at “over 10,000 students from across Mississippi,” as he stated the figure. On policy, he tied the border to the American dream: “When you let in a flood of illegal immigration, what it does is it drives down the wages of young people and makes housing unaffordable for the entire American population… We shut that border down the very first day that Donald J. Trump was the President of the United States.” He urged students toward marriage and family — “while you’re young, have those babies if you’re able to. That’s something Charlie said all the time” — defended free speech as the principle Charlie “lived and died for,” and then took student questions for the remainder of the event.

Why it matters

The Ole Miss event is the Vice President’s longest-form address of the fall on this chronicle — the administration’s standard-bearer making the case to the student movement Charlie Kirk built, in the movement’s own first tour stop season after his death, with the border, housing, and family case stated in full.
