What happened

President Donald Trump held a bilateral meeting with President Lee Jae Myung of the Republic of Korea at the Gyeongju National Museum on October 29, 2025. President Lee, speaking through an interpreter, noted that the President was “the first U.S. President that has been conferred the Grand Order of Mugunghwa by Korea” and “one and only foreign head of state who has made two state visits to the Republic of Korea,” and credited him as a “peacemaker” in “eight conflict zones” in nine months, as Lee stated it. Lee asked for U.S. support — nuclear fuel supply and working-level consultations — so Korea could build nuclear-powered submarines to monitor undersea activity, as he described the request.

The President thanked Lee for “the beautiful honor you bestowed on me as the only American President,” and took up the peninsula: “The Korean Peninsula, and I know you are officially at war, but we will see what we can do to get that all straightened out… I know Kim Jong Un very well. We get along very well. We really weren’t able to work out timing.” He said the two countries would build ships together in the United States — “we’re working in the Philadelphia yards and in various other places” — repeated the Toyota $10 billion figure from Japan, and put investment by the end of his first term at “$21 or $22 trillion,” as he stated the figure.

Why it matters

The bilateral puts two dated items on the record: Korea’s formal request for U.S. support on nuclear-powered submarines, and the President’s commitment to work on the peninsula with Kim Jong-un — the “lingering cloud” he returned to at that evening’s dinner, paged alongside this one.
