What happened

President Lee Jae Myung of the Republic of Korea presented President Donald Trump with the Grand Order of Mugunghwa — South Korea’s highest order — in Gyeongju on October 29, 2025. In the presentation remarks, delivered in Korean and interpreted in the broadcast, President Lee said the medal honored the President’s achievements in paving the way toward peace on the Korean Peninsula six years earlier, and was given in anticipation of the peace and prosperity he would bring to the Peninsula, as the remarks were interpreted. The President called the medal beautiful, thanked President Lee, and said he would treasure it, as interpreted in the broadcast.

President Lee also presented a gift prepared for the President: a replica of the gold crown of the ancient Silla kingdom excavated from the Cheonmachong (Heavenly Horse Tomb) — described in the presentation as the most splendid and largest of the six surviving Silla gold crowns, symbolizing the divine authority connecting heaven and earthly rule and the strong leadership of the king, and offered, as interpreted, in the spirit of Silla, which first unified the Peninsula, together with the symbolism of the Korea–U.S. alliance.

Why it matters

The presentation made President Trump the first U.S. president conferred the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, as President Lee stated in the bilateral meeting paged alongside this one — the ceremonial peak of the Gyeongju summit day, recorded here as the summit’s honor of record.
