What happened

President Donald Trump delivered remarks to sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington at Yokosuka, Japan, on October 28, 2025. “A big hello to the greatest sailors anywhere in the seas, the incredible men and women of the United States Navy,” he said, calling the ship “100,000 tons… forward deployed, symbol of American might, power and prestige.” He introduced the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, who “gave up a hell of a job… They were going to pay millions of dollars. They didn’t want him to leave,” as the President told it, and credited him on the maritime drug campaign: “Those drug ships aren’t coming in anymore. We can’t find a ship.”

On doctrine, the President said: “Unlike past administrations, we will not be politically correct… From now on, if we’re in a war, we’re going to win the war. We’re going to win it like nobody ever before.” He called “the cherished alliance between the United States and Japan… one of the most remarkable relationships in the entire world,” noted that both countries’ stock markets had hit all-time highs that day, as he stated it, and introduced Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, “the first female prime minister in the history of Japan.” Prime Minister Takaichi recalled that six years earlier, at the same place, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Trump had stood side by side aboard the ship, and renewed the resolve “to make the Indo-Pacific free and open,” as she stated it.

Why it matters

The carrier remarks are the military centerpiece of the Japan visit — the President addressing the forward-deployed fleet with the War Secretary and the new Japanese prime minister beside him — and they state the administration’s war-fighting doctrine and its drug-interdiction claim in their fullest form to that date.
