What happened
President Donald Trump held a pull-aside with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 26, 2025, on the margins of the ASEAN summit. “It’s a great honor to be with the president of Brazil. It’s a great country. It’s a big, beautiful country, and I think they’re doing well,” the President said. “I think we should be able to make some pretty good deals for both countries. And I’m going to leave that a little bit to Jamieson and Scott and Marco… I think we’ll be able to do some pretty good deals. We’ve been speaking, and I think we’ll end up having a very good relationship.”
President Lula, speaking through an interpreter as carried in the broadcast, said he believed the press would have good news after the meeting, that Brazil was highly interested in an extraordinary relationship with the United States, and that there was no reason for any kind of conflict between the two countries; he said he had brought his agenda in writing, in English, as he stated it. Asked about the conditions under which he had said he would reduce tariffs on Brazil, President Trump said: “We’re going to see. We’re dealing on it right now, and we’ll be discussing it for a little while, and I think we’ll probably come to a conclusion pretty quickly.” Asked about former President Jair Bolsonaro, he said: “I’ve always liked him. I feel very badly about what happened to him. I’ve always thought he was a straight shooter, but he’s gone through a lot” — and, asked whether Bolsonaro was on the day’s agenda, answered: “It’s none of your business.” He said Venezuela would not be discussed — “they’re not involved with Venezuela” — and previewed the China meeting: “I think we’re going to have a deal with China… We’re going to meet then later in China, and we’re going to meet in the U.S. in either Washington or at Mar-a-Lago, Palm Beach.”
Why it matters
The Kuala Lumpur pull-aside was the first Trump–Lula meeting of the term on this chronicle’s record, held under a 50 percent U.S. tariff on Brazil that the following day’s Air Force One gaggle — paged alongside this one — confirmed was still in place. Both presidents put a deal on the record as the expected outcome; the tariff conditions were left to the negotiation the President said was already under way.
