What happened
President Donald Trump joined Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, 2025, to sign the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords — a joint declaration ending the military conflict between Cambodia and Thailand, as the White House broadcast records.
“Well, this is so exciting because we did something that a lot of people said couldn’t be done and we saved maybe millions of lives on this one piece deal itself,” the President said. He opened with condolences to Thailand on the passing of Her Majesty the Queen Mother — “a beautiful, incredible woman” — and said the signing honored her memory “by bringing the blessing of peace to the nation she dearly loved.” He described the conflict’s origins: “Earlier this year, an armed clash broke out along the border of these two countries… resulting in numerous deaths and thousands — thousands and thousands of people displaced from their homes.” His account of the diplomacy: phone calls from Turnberry, Scotland — “I was actually at Turnberry in Scotland when I did this… ‘This is much more important than playing a round of golf’” — followed by a July ceasefire “after extremely productive discussions.”
Under the agreement, both countries “are agreeing to cease all hostilities and work to build good neighborly relationships,” the President said, with 18 Cambodian prisoners of war to be released and ASEAN observers, including Malaysia, deployed to see that the peace prevails. Prime Minister Anwar credited the President’s personal calls to both leaders and his “tenacity” and “courage,” and noted that he had even broken protocol rules to ride in the car with the President. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said his military commanders were discussing the first phase of heavy-weapons withdrawal, and added: “I have nominated President Donald J. Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” calling peace “saving life.” Thai Prime Minister Anutin thanked the President for his condolences, said “Thailand stands for peace,” and confirmed that “Thailand will also begin the process of releasing the 18 detained Cambodian soldiers.”
Alongside the peace treaty, the President announced a major trade deal with Cambodia and a critical-minerals MOU with Thailand, plus the reciprocal-trade framework with Thailand to be concluded by year’s end. “This is one of eight wars that my administration has ended in just eight months,” he said, adding that the Pakistan-Afghanistan flare-up was “something I can” resolve too, as he stated it. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ambassador Jamieson Greer were thanked by name for their roles.
Why it matters
This is the signature event of the Kuala Lumpur leg — a signed peace accord, prisoner releases, ASEAN observers, and paired trade deals — delivered in a ceremony that also carried the trip’s Nobel Peace Prize nomination moment.
