What happened
President Donald Trump delivered opening remarks at a working session with U.S.-ASEAN leaders in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, 2025, calling the day “an incredibly successful day for Malaysia” and honoring a promise he said he made to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim: that if Malaysia helped with the peace treaty between Cambodia and Thailand, he would come to Kuala Lumpur — “I promised I’d be here… and here I am,” as he stated it.
On the day’s results: “Today, the prime minister and I signed a major trade deal between the United States and Malaysia and together we took part in the signing of a historic peace agreement ending the hostilities between Cambodia and Thailand. And we’re calling it the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords,” he said. He congratulated Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, noting Anutin had returned home because of the passing of Thailand’s Queen Mother, “this magnificent woman known all over the world and respected by everybody.” He thanked the other ASEAN countries for agreeing to send observers — “in most cases your heads of state because I don’t see too many observers” — to help ensure a lasting settlement.
“Today’s signing represents just one of eight conflicts that we’ve ended in eight months of the Trump presidency,” he said, counting the Gaza war’s end among them, with 59 countries involved in that effort. He pledged that the United States is “with you 100%” as a partner to Southeast Asia for “many generations to come,” and said new or near-complete trade deals were in play with partners “from Cambodia to Japan to South Korea,” alongside richer partnerships on energy, technology, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. “Last year we were a country that was doing very poorly… We’re going to be at the end of my first year over 20 trillion dollars worth of investment into the United States,” he stated — the day’s session closed with the week ahead set at the APEC meetings in South Korea.
Why it matters
This is the on-record capstone of the Kuala Lumpur leg of the Asia trip: the trade deal, the peace accords, and the observer commitment all stated in one room by the President, with the APEC week in South Korea — and the Xi meeting — as the stated next chapter.
