What happened
President Donald Trump celebrated Diwali — the Hindu festival of lights — at the White House on October 21, 2025, as the White House broadcast records. He lit the diya “as a symbol of faith in the victory of light over darkness… knowledge over ignorance and good over evil,” as he framed the festival.
He was joined by FBI Director Kash Patel (“who’s really hitting his stride”), Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, Pastor Paula White, the Indian Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, and the new Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor — “You’re going to do a fantastic job” — as well as CEOs of some of the world’s largest companies: IBM’s Arvind Krishna, Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen, Micron’s Sanjay Mehrotra, and Palo Alto Networks’ Nikesh Arora.
“I just spoke to your prime minister today. We had a great conversation. We talked about trade,” he said of Prime Minister Modi — adding that the trade channel had helped avert an India-Pakistan war: “the fact that trade was involved I was able to talk about it and we have no war with Pakistan and India and that was a very, very good thing.” On the economy he cited “more than 17 trillion dollars of investment pouring into the United States… over 20 trillion dollars by the time the year’s up,” comparing it to “less than a trillion” over the prior administration’s four years, as he stated the figures. He closed with the day’s theme: “the victory of light over darkness,” and wished Diwali greetings to the people of India on behalf of all Americans.
Why it matters
The celebration doubled as an economic showcase — the India trade channel, the Modi call, and the $17T/$20T investment claims — in front of the Indian-American business elite whose companies, the President noted, he watches as market indicators.
