What happened

President Donald Trump hosted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia for a bilateral lunch at the White House on October 20, 2025. “We’re here to talk about trade, submarines, lots of other military equipment. They’re big orderers of our great military equipment,” the President said, adding that the two sides were “discussing critical minerals and rare earths and we’re going to be signing an agreement that’s been negotiated over a period of four or five months.”

The agreement was signed at the lunch. Prime Minister Albanese stated its scale: “This is an $8.5 billion pipeline that we have ready to go,” with “a billion dollars contributed from Australia and the United States over the next six months with projects that are immediately available,” organized in three groups of projects. The President predicted that “in about a year from now, we’ll have so much critical mineral and rare earths that you won’t know what to do with them.” The leaders also reviewed the AUKUS submarine program, with the President asking how Australia’s naval purchases were progressing and an official answering that the submarines being built for Australia were starting to move along.

Why it matters

The lunch produced a signed critical-minerals agreement with a stated dollar pipeline and a six-month funding tranche — the supply-chain centerpiece of the Albanese visit — recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.
