What happened
President Donald Trump hosted the President and the Prime Minister of Finland at the White House on October 9, 2025 — a pairing he said he did not remember seeing before. The meeting’s business was icebreakers. “We’re buying ice breakers. We’re building them together for the most part. We’re doing four over there and seven over here,” the President said, putting the combined order at 11 ships.
He framed the purchase as catching up: the United States has, as he stated it, only one icebreaker across its Arctic waters while other countries have more, and Finland — which he said holds something close to a monopoly on building them — would teach the United States the business: “Nobody makes them like Finland. I’ve heard that for a long time.”
Why it matters
The icebreaker order is the administration’s Arctic-capability move stated in hulls: 11 ships split between Finnish and American yards, bought from the country the President credits with the world’s best icebreaker industry. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.
Scoreboard watch
The 11-ship icebreaker order — four built in Finland, seven in the United States, as stated by the President — is recorded here as a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard.
