What happened
President Donald Trump hosted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House on October 7, 2025. “It’s an honor to have the prime minister of Canada, Mark Carney,” he said, describing a relationship with “some natural conflict, but we’ll probably work that out.” Trade headed the agenda, with the Gaza negotiations alongside it: “I think there’s a possibility that we could have peace in the Middle East… We want a release of the hostages immediately.”
The session also took press questions on the government shutdown, including whether some federal workers should receive back pay. The President answered: “I follow the law and what the law says is correct and I follow the law.”
Why it matters
The Carney meeting is the U.S.–Canada relationship conducted on camera mid-shutdown: trade friction acknowledged between the two leaders, and the Middle East plan presented as a shared project. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.
