What happened
President Donald Trump used the October 6, 2025 signing to restart an Alaska project he said he had approved in his first term and the following administration had undone: “I signed this years ago and Biden unsigned it for me… now we’re starting again.” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum laid out the decision: reversal of the prior-era denial of the Ambler Road — in his words, a 211-mile toll road, not a public road, running from the Dalton Highway corridor to the Ambler mining district, which he described as holding some of the richest mining deposits, in a region with no roads. “Alaska is not a colony. They’re a state,” Burgum said, noting the appeal had come from the State of Alaska.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright tied the road to critical minerals, saying the Ambler district infrastructure would have an immense impact on mining output of the minerals the defense industrial base and the broader economy need.
Why it matters
The Ambler Road approval is the administration’s Alaska resource doctrine in one signature: a state-requested mining road restored by presidential decision after a change of administration killed it. It is recorded on the Energy & Permitting hub.
Scoreboard watch
The signed Ambler Road approval — 211 miles, toll road, as stated by Secretary Burgum — is recorded here as a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard (signing).
