What happened
First Lady Melania Trump introduced the President at the Navy 250 celebration in Norfolk, Virginia, on October 5, 2025, after the two had watched a demonstration she called an inspiring display of the Navy’s skills. “It is an honor to be with you to celebrate the 250th year since the United States Navy was officially established,” she said. “Generations of sailors have kept America free because of their presence on the high seas.”
President Trump honored individual service across the Navy’s history, including, as he told it, a sailor named Felix who served aboard the USS Talladega in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered, retired as a chief petty officer in 1966, and had celebrated his 100th birthday this year — and who was present in the audience. “Felix, we salute you,” the President said.
Why it matters
Navy 250 is the semiquincentennial of the sea service marked by its commander-in-chief on the Norfolk waterfront — the ceremonial anchor of the administration’s military-anniversary year. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.
