What happened

President Donald Trump spoke with reporters before departing the White House on October 5, 2025, en route to the Navy 250 celebration. “This is a big day… We’re celebrating our navy and our military. We have the greatest military anywhere in the world, not even close,” he said.

On the Gaza plan, he said the hostage release could come very soon: “They’re in negotiation right now as we speak,” calling the plan “a great deal for Israel… a great deal for the entire Arab world, Muslim world, and world.” On Portland, he disagreed with a judge’s decision on the deployment question, as he stated it: “Portland is burning to the ground. You have agitators, insurrectionists… The governor, the mayor, the politicians are petrified for their lives.”

Why it matters

The gaggle pairs the day’s celebration with the two live fights of that week — the Gaza negotiations and the Portland deployment litigation — in the President’s own words before he left the grounds. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.

Scoreboard watch

The Gaza negotiation status and the Portland deployment dispute, as stated by the President, are recorded here as candidate items for the weekly scoreboard.
