What happened

President Donald Trump held a pull-aside with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in New York on September 23, 2025, carried on the White House channel. The President praised Mirziyoyev as “very smart and very competent” and noted Uzbekistan’s purchases of American products: “He purchased billions of dollars worth of our equipment and we do make the best equipment in the world.”

Mirziyoyev congratulated the President on his General Assembly speech — “you are really a person who can hold his word. So, you say something and then you act” — and thanked him for stopping seven conflicts, “one of them is very close in our region,” the Azerbaijan–Armenia war. At the table, a $105 billion purchase figure was put on the record against $19.4 billion in 2018–24, prompting the President: “That’s not bad.
