What happened
President Trump opened the meeting by calling it his most important of the UN General Assembly week: “We want to end the war in Gaza. We’re going to end it. Maybe we can end it right now.” He said the leaders were respected all over the world and that the group held the key to an agreement, noting that 20 hostages remained alive and 38 bodies were held, whose families “want their son or daughter back just as much as they wanted them as though they were alive.”
A participating leader, speaking for the group, said the only reason they were there was “to stop the war and bring the hostages back” and that they counted on the President’s leadership. The President said that if the group could agree, he would then see the leaders in Israel, “including Bibi,” to get it done.
Why it matters
This meeting was the regional capstone of the President’s UNGA week — the session at which the Arab and Muslim leaders were asked to underwrite the Gaza framework he unveiled with Prime Minister Netanyahu six days later.
