What happened

President Donald Trump held a pull-aside with Argentine President Javier Milei in New York on September 23, 2025, carried on the White House channel, and used it to make an endorsement: “I’m doing something that I don’t often do. I’m giving a full endorsement to him. We just endorsed him for president… To the people of Argentina, we’re backing him 100%. We think he’s done a fantastic job. He, like us, inherited a mess and what he’s done to fix it is good.”

The President said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent “is working with their country so that they can get good debt and all of the things that you need to make Argentina great again.” Asked whether the United States would bail Argentina out, he answered: “We’re going to help them. I don’t think they need a bailout.” Bessent, at the table, called the transformation “unbelievable”: “He inherited the same kind of mess you did, and he’s doing the same kind of job.”

Why it matters

A sitting U.S. president’s on-camera endorsement of a foreign leader facing an election, paired with a Treasury support track run by Secretary Bessent, is the fullest public statement of the administration’s Argentina policy — the relationship that produced the currency-swap and market-support measures tracked on this site’s scoreboard.

Scoreboard watch

This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: the President’s September 23, 2025 full endorsement and backing pledge for President Milei, as stated at this meeting, to be checked against the Treasury measures that followed.
