What happened

President Donald Trump, joined at the White House on September 22, 2025 by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, announced what he called “historic steps to confront the crisis of autism.” The President cited the rise in reported prevalence — “one in 10,000” decades ago, “now it’s one in 31” overall and, as he stated it, one in 12 for boys in California — and said autism rates have “surged by much more than 400 percent” since 2000, as he stated the figures.

The headline action: “Effective immediately, the FDA will be notifying physicians that the use of acetaminophen” — Tylenol — “during pregnancy can be associated with a very increased risk of autism,” with a strong recommendation that women limit its use in pregnancy unless medically necessary, such as an extremely high fever. The President also urged that childhood vaccines be spread out “over a period of years” in smaller doses rather than given in combined visits, as he described his preference.

Secretary Kennedy said HHS research had found that “folate deficiency in a child’s brain can lead to autism” and that peer-reviewed literature documents improved verbal communication in up to 60 percent of folate-deficient children with autism given leucovorin, as he stated it; the FDA moved to update that drug’s label. Director Bhattacharya announced the NIH Autism Data Science Initiative: “an additional $50 million,” with 13 peer-reviewed grant awards chosen from nearly 250 applicant teams, as he stated them.

Why it matters

This announcement is the founding document of the administration’s autism program — the acetaminophen guidance, the leucovorin label path, and the NIH data-science initiative all run from this room, and the claims made here are the ones this site’s Health & MAHA tracking checks as the agencies act. Secretary Kennedy’s HHS owns the follow-through.

Scoreboard watch

This announcement is a scoreboard candidate on several dated, checkable items: the FDA physician notification on acetaminophen, the leucovorin label update, and the 13 NIH grant awards at $50 million — each as stated by the officials in the broadcast.
