What happened
Vice President JD Vance spoke at Hatch Stamping in Howell, Michigan — a manufacturer founded in 1952 making parts first for M1 rifles and now for automobiles — on September 17, 2025. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer introduced him after reporting, as she stated the figures, that the Department of Labor had registered over 180,000 new apprentices and nearly 1,800 new apprenticeship programs since January, toward what she called President Trump’s goal of one million active apprentices.
Vance framed the stop around the working families tax cuts and Congressman Tom Barrett’s role in passing them: “We talk about no taxes on overtime, which we are proud to deliver. No taxes on tips, which we are proud to deliver.” The law, he said, also increased the child tax credit and rewards companies “for building and investing in the United States of America” rather than shipping jobs overseas. Much of the speech memorialized Charlie Kirk, assassinated one week earlier: Vance credited Kirk and Turning Point USA with building the youth movement that elected the ticket — “I would not be here without Charlie” — and with helping staff the administration, and he pledged to keep debating rather than answer disagreement with violence.
On public safety, Vance said the President had sent the National Guard into Washington, D.C., and, “as of a couple of days ago,” Memphis, and addressed Governor Gretchen Whitmer directly: “the city of Detroit, we know, has got some serious crime problems… Gretchen, we are happy to send the National Guard to Detroit, Michigan. All you got to do is ask.” He recounted a conversation with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth after a strike on a cartel boat, saying Hegseth told him the drug boats had “completely stopped,” as Vance relayed the account, and closed by framing the November 2026 midterms as a choice between politicians who “shipped your jobs overseas” and those fighting the cartels.
Why it matters
Howell was the Vice President’s first manufacturing-floor tax speech after the Kirk assassination, and it fuses the two themes that define his fall travel: the working families tax cuts as the administration’s economic centerpiece, and the National Guard city-safety offer he repeated across the country.
