What happened

President Donald Trump announced on September 2, 2025, in the Oval Office, that the headquarters of U.S. Space Command will move to Huntsville, Alabama. “I am thrilled to report that the US Space Command headquarters will move to the beautiful locale of a place called Huntsville, Alabama, forever to be known from this point forward as Rocket City,” he said. “This will result in more than 30,000 Alabama jobs and probably much more than that and hundreds of millions of dollars of investment — and that’s billions.” The decision, he said, “will help America defend and dominate the high frontier.”

The President recounted the history as he presented it: Space Force and Space Command were created in his first term, Huntsville was initially selected, and “those plans were wrongfully obstructed” under the prior administration, which kept the headquarters in Colorado. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink attended, along with Alabama’s congressional delegation. Senator Katie Britt, Senator Tommy Tuberville, and House Armed Services Chairman Mike Rogers spoke in support; Rogers described the two site competitions Alabama won and the Air Force review that called them fair. A speaker at the event looked ahead to “the Donald J. Trump Space Command Center in Huntsville, Alabama,” and others tied the move to the Golden Dome missile-defense program to be built at Redstone Arsenal.

Why it matters

The Huntsville decision settles one of the longest-running basing fights in the defense establishment and anchors Space Command — and, on the speakers’ account, Golden Dome work — at Redstone Arsenal. It is also a first-term promise revisited: the President framed the move as restoring his original selection after a four-year reversal.
