What happened

President Donald Trump signed executive orders in the Oval Office on August 25, 2025, in a session carried in full on the White House channel that opened with an extended review of the federal crime intervention in Washington, D.C. As the President stated the results: “we actually arrested a total of well over 1,000 people. We took hundreds of guns away… We apprehended scores of illegal aliens. We seized dozens of illegal firearms. There have been zero murders” in the last week — “Washington was the most dangerous place in this country. And now… it’s probably the safest place in our country.”

Staff Secretary Will Scharf then presented the orders. On cashless bail — “when the big crime in this country started,” the President said — the order charges the Attorney General with identifying jurisdictions with cashless-bail policies and withholding or revoking federal funds and grants flowing to them, alongside holding more defendants in federal custody on federal charges rather than release under local cashless-bail policies. A further order addressed flag burning, charging the Attorney General on the subject; the President noted the Supreme Court’s 5–4 decision treating flag burning as speech and the administration’s stated alternative grounds. The session also displayed the FIFA World Cup trophy ahead of questions.

Why it matters

The August 25 orders extend the D.C. intervention into national policy: federal funding leverage against cashless-bail jurisdictions everywhere, and a flag-burning order that tests the boundary of the Court’s speech ruling. Both are dated, signed actions the scoreboard can track jurisdiction by jurisdiction.
