What happened

President Donald Trump visited The People’s House exhibit in Washington on August 22, 2025, touring the relocated White House Historical Association gift shop and gallery with its president, Stewart McLaurin, and gaggling with the press, carried on the White House channel. McLaurin explained the move: the shop’s longtime home was vacated for ballroom construction, and the 33,000-square-foot People’s House experience is open seven days a week, free to the public, while White House tours are paused for the build.

The President used the visit to walk through the renovation program: the Lincoln bathroom being redone from its Truman-era Art Deco, cracked floors being fixed, and the ballroom — “being donated… a couple of hundred million dollars at least” — plus a possible cosmetic project on the Executive Office Building, “one of the most beautiful buildings anywhere in Washington,” once its stone color is addressed. “We’re fixing up the city. We’re fixing up the White House,” he said, noting the work is funded with money he gives, “in addition” to his salary.

Why it matters

The visit puts the ballroom project — the largest physical change to the White House complex in the administration — in its operational context: tours displaced, the Historical Association’s public exhibit carrying the visitor experience in the meantime, and the President personally fronting the renovation case.

Scoreboard watch

This visit is a scoreboard reference point: the ballroom and renovation program as described by the President on August 22, 2025 — including the donated cost figure as he stated it — to be checked against the project as built.
