What happened
President Donald Trump met federal law enforcement officers and military personnel in Washington, D.C., on August 21, 2025, to thank them for the results of the federal crime intervention, carried on the White House channel. “I just want to thank everybody very much for being here. I wanted to do this. We’ve had some incredible results. The results have come out, and it’s like a different place. It’s like a different city,” he said. “We’re going to make it safe. And we’re going to then go on to other places. But we’re going to stay here for a while. We want to make this absolutely perfect. It’s our capital.”
He previewed the physical program that would follow the security operation: going back to Congress for money to redo pavement and medians, remove graffiti “real fast” with Clark Construction, and lay “brand-new surfaces” on roads and streets so arriving visitors find the capital “spotless.” He said the thank-you calls had been unlike anything in his presidency: “I’ve received more phone calls from people in the last four days than I ever have” — residents telling him they had not gone out to a restaurant in four years and now felt safe to take their families to dinner.
Why it matters
The August 21 appearance is the intervention’s first in-person presidential thank-you to the forces carrying it out — and its pivot point, where the President first pairs the crime operation with the capital-beautification program (resurfacing, medians, graffiti removal) he would seek congressional money for.
Scoreboard watch
This appearance is a scoreboard reference point: the D.C. intervention results as characterized by the President on August 21, 2025, and his stated intent to seek congressional funding for the capital cleanup and resurfacing program, to be checked against the crime data and the appropriations record.
