What happened

President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia addressed the press together in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025, following their bilateral summit — the first meeting between the two presidents in years, and, as President Putin noted, the first U.S.–Russia summit in four years. President Putin spoke first and at length: “Our negotiations have been held in a constructive atmosphere of mutual respect. We had very thorough negotiations,” he said, thanking his American counterpart for the proposal to meet in Alaska and recalling the two countries’ shared history there, from Russian America to the Second World War lend-lease air bridge.

On Ukraine, President Putin said the two sides see the striving of the administration and of President Trump personally “to help facilitate the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict,” described the situation as a tragedy bound up, in his presentation, with fundamental threats to Russia’s security, and noted that the Presidents had maintained direct contact and that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff had traveled to Russia several times in the preparation. The joint appearance closed the summit day that had begun with the President’s Air Force One gaggle setting a rapid ceasefire as his test.

Why it matters

The Anchorage press conference is the public record of the first Trump–Putin summit of the second term: no ceasefire was announced at it, but it restarted head-of-state dialogue after four years without a summit and set up the process — a Putin–Zelenskyy meeting, then a possible trilateral — that the White House pursued in Washington three days later.

Scoreboard watch

This press conference is a scoreboard reference point: the summit process commitments described at Anchorage on August 15, 2025, and the absence of a ceasefire announcement at the event itself, to be checked against the Putin–Zelenskyy and trilateral meetings the administration said would follow.
