What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from the press aboard Air Force One on August 15, 2025, en route to Anchorage, Alaska, for his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, carried on the White House channel. Asked what would make the summit a success, he said: “I want to see a ceasefire. This is not to do with Europe. Europe’s not telling me what to do, but they’re going to be involved in the process, obviously, as will Zelenskyy. I want to see a ceasefire rapidly. I don’t know if it’s going to be today, but I’m not going to be happy if it’s not today.”

The President said more than 7,000 soldiers had been lost in the previous week — “I’m in this to stop the killing” — and addressed the terms he would and would not negotiate: territorial swaps “will be discussed, but I’ve got to let Ukraine make that decision… I’m not here to negotiate for Ukraine. I’m here to get him at a table.” On security guarantees, he said they were possible “along with Europe,” but “not in the form of NATO.” He also noted the business delegation traveling with President Putin: “they want to do business, but they’re not doing business until we get the war settled.”

Why it matters

This short gaggle is the President’s own statement of his Anchorage mandate, given hours before the summit: a rapid ceasefire as the test, Ukraine’s ownership of territorial decisions, and non-NATO security guarantees left open — the framework against which the summit’s outcome, and the European leaders’ meeting that followed on August 18, are measured.

Scoreboard watch

This gaggle is a scoreboard reference point: the President’s August 15, 2025 ceasefire demand and his stated negotiating limits (no negotiating for Ukraine; security guarantees possible with Europe, not in NATO form), as stated by the President, to be checked against the summit record.
