What happened

President Donald Trump hosted President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia at the White House on August 8, 2025, for a peace summit and trilateral signing, carried on the White House channel. “For more than 35 years, Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought a bitter conflict that resulted in tremendous suffering for both nations,” the President said. “But with this accord, we’ve finally succeeded in making peace.” The two countries committed, as he stated it, “to stop all fighting forever, open up commerce, travel and diplomatic relations and respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The declaration’s centerpiece, as the President described it, is a special transit corridor — “the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” — giving Azerbaijan full access to its Nakhchivan territory while fully respecting Armenia’s sovereignty, with Armenia creating an exclusive partnership with the United States to develop the corridor for up to 99 years. The United States also signed bilateral agreements with both countries on energy, trade, and technology including AI, and lifted restrictions on defense cooperation with Azerbaijan. The President thanked Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and their teams for the diplomatic work, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who attended, on the energy track.

Why it matters

The August 8 joint declaration is the administration’s signature Caucasus achievement: a U.S.-brokered end to one of the post-Soviet world’s longest conflicts, with an American-developed transit corridor at its center and bilateral energy and technology agreements attached. Its dated commitments — the fighting stopped, the corridor built, the cooperation expanded — are the checkable core of the peace the President announced.

Scoreboard candidate

Scoreboard candidate: the August 8, 2025 Armenia–Azerbaijan joint declaration signed at the White House, including the Trump Route corridor partnership (up to 99 years, as stated) and the lifting of U.S. defense-cooperation restrictions on Azerbaijan — a signing flagged for the scoreboard editors; the entry itself remains review-gated.
