What happened

President Donald Trump welcomed Apple CEO Tim Cook to the White House on August 6, 2025, opening with words on the shooting that morning at Fort Stewart, Georgia — five people seriously wounded, the shooter in custody, and the Army Criminal Investigation Division on site, as he reported it — before turning to the announcement. “Today, Apple is announcing that it will invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years,” the President said. “That’s a hundred billion dollars more than they were originally going to invest. And this is the largest investment Apple has ever made in America and anywhere else.”

The President said the commitment would directly create more than 20,000 new American jobs, with thousands more at Apple suppliers including Corning, Broadcom, Texas Instruments, and Samsung; that Apple would build “the largest and most sophisticated smart glass production line in the world” in Harrodsburg, Kentucky; and that Apple would help develop and manufacture semiconductors and semiconductor equipment in Texas, Utah, Arizona, and New York, and build a rare-earth recycling line in Mountain Pass, California. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick attended. The President also stated the tariff framework behind the announcement: a large tariff on chips and semiconductors, but “if you’re building in the United States or have committed to build in the United States, there will be no charge.”

Why it matters

The Apple announcement is the flagship example of the administration’s commit-to-build tariff model: the largest single corporate investment pledge of the term, as the President presented it, exchanged for exemption from the coming semiconductor tariff — the deal structure the White House then pointed to as the template for other manufacturers.

Scoreboard candidate

Scoreboard candidate: Apple’s $600 billion U.S. investment over four years and the American Manufacturing Program, as announced August 6, 2025, with the stated figures of more than 20,000 direct jobs and the Harrodsburg, Kentucky smart-glass line — flagged for the scoreboard editors; the entry itself remains review-gated. The White House’s Apple investment clip from the following day is recorded as an alternate of this page.
