What happened
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 5, 2025, establishing the White House Task Force on the 2028 Summer Olympics, at an event with LA28 chairman Casey Wasserman, carried on the White House channel. “Today I will sign an executive order establishing the White House task force on the 2028 Summer Olympics, mobilizing the entire federal government to ensure the games are safe, seamless, and historically successful,” he said. He recalled that in his first term the administration was instrumental in helping Los Angeles win the bid: “When we got it, I said, ‘It’s too bad I won’t be president then.’ But sort of we took a very circuitous route, didn’t we?”
The President recognized task force members and officials in attendance, including Vice President JD Vance, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and Deputy Chiefs of Staff Stephen Miller, Dan Scavino, James Blair, Taylor Budowich, and Nick Luna, along with retired Team USA gold medalists. In the question period that followed, the President addressed government cutting — “cutting with a scalpel as opposed to with an axe” — and said of tariff receipts that the purpose “is primarily to pay down debt,” while adding “there’s also a possibility that we’re taking in so much money that we may very well make a dividend to the people of America.”
Why it matters
The August 5 order puts the 2028 Los Angeles Games — the first Summer Olympics on American soil of this era — under a named White House task force three years out, with the Vice President and the homeland-security and justice leadership on it: the federal government’s formal starting gun for the Games.
