What happened

President Donald Trump signed an executive order at the White House on July 31, 2025, formally announcing the newest members of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, carried on the White House channel. “This is an important step in our mission to make America healthy again,” he said, noting the council’s lineage back to the Eisenhower administration. The council is led, as he introduced him, by two-time major champion golfer Bryson DeChambeau. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Secretary of Education Linda McMahon attended, along with sports figures including Lawrence Taylor.

“The order that I’ll sign today directs the council to develop strategies to improve America’s physical fitness and renew the American spirit of excellence, competitiveness, and sportsmanship,” the President said. “To that end, I’m pleased to announce that we’re officially restoring the Presidential Fitness Test and the Presidential Fitness Award… From the late 1950s until 2013, graduate scholars all across our country competed against each other in the Presidential Fitness Test, and it was a big deal. This was a wonderful tradition, and we’re bringing it back.” The event’s question period ranged to Gaza food aid, where the President said the United States had given $60 million for food a couple of weeks earlier.

Why it matters

The July 31 order revives a school-era institution discontinued in 2013 and places it inside the Make America Healthy Again program — the fitness test restored by executive order, run through a celebrity-athlete council, with the health and education secretaries as its departmental anchors.
