What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from the traveling press aboard Air Force One on July 29, 2025, on the return flight from his Scotland trip, carried on the White House channel. Asked about Gaza and the First Lady’s view of the crisis, the President said she “thinks it’s terrible and she sees the same pictures that you see, and that we all see,” adding: “there’s nothing you can say other than it’s terrible when you see the kids… those are kids that are starving… They got to get them food and we’re going to get them food.”

Asked whether he would attend this year’s G20 summit in South Africa, the President said he did not think so and would likely send someone else, citing, as he put it, “a lot of problems with South Africa” and “very, very bad policies.” On a meeting with President Xi, he said Xi wants to meet, that he looked forward to it, and that it would likely come “before the end of the year,” reporting that he had just heard from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that that day’s meeting with China “went very well.”

Why it matters

This airborne gaggle is the President’s own readout of the Scotland trip’s diplomacy: a food commitment for Gaza stated in his words, a public signal that he would skip the South Africa G20, and a year-end horizon for a Xi meeting — each a dated marker the chronicle can check against what followed.

Scoreboard watch

This gaggle is a scoreboard reference point: the President’s July 29, 2025 statements that a Xi meeting would likely happen before the end of the year and that he probably would not attend the G20 summit in South Africa, each as stated by the President, to be checked against the meeting and summit record.
